Scout Community Week

Written by Pete Fillery. Posted in Features

This is the first year we've been involved in DO1THING Scout Community Week and we're very glad we got the opportunity, in the end we recieved help from the Girl Guides, Cubs and Scouts!

Ramsbottom Explorer Scout Unit were looking to help us with one of our ongoing projects: the restoration of a former convent orchard, Holly Mount Orchard.

Originally planted c.1910 to provide fruit for the convent, the orchard is one of the only remaining examples of its kind in the region with over 50 heritage fruit trees still surviving. Since the closure of the convent in the 1980s the orchard was left abandoned and was close to being lost forever, until restoration began in 2010. It is now a thriving local community resource – a community orchard where local people can learn about growing fruit and help to preserve this unique landscape.

As part of the Scout community week the scouts decided to help the orchard volunteers to complete the next phase of the orchard restoration – rebuilding the main entrance path and steps, clearing the overgrown areas and installing water butts and drain pipes.

As mentioned at the start we also recieved some INCREDIBLE help from Tottington Girl Guides and St Andrews Cubs, both these groups helped at our Wildflower Plot and we look forward to seeing the results of your hard labour...

Just to top things off we also got given a MASSIVE helping hand from 1st Ramsbottom St Andrews Scouts, who set to work on using up all the donated compost we got through the National community week campaign 'ScoutsDo1Thing' (Thank you B&Q). The scouts did a fantastic job at our Hearth of the Ram plot by planting up all the tractor tires we were given from 'Learn with Liz' (Thanks to you guys too) and then we all headed to Nuttall Park where we ensured the fruit bushes and herb bed were given some more nourishment...
